Viktor Pavlov: “Jewellery is a small sculpture you carry with you, creating a moment of elegance in the middle of an ordinary day.”

Between sculpture and wearable object, Viktor Pavlov develops a language that is both subtle and precise, shaped by organic forms and their seemingly effortless logic. His pieces do not aim to impress instantly, but to unfold over timethrough detail, material, and presence.

This conversation with Viktor Pavlov comes as a preview of his presence in Romania. Stepping into his universe reveals a practice where contemporary jewellery becomes more than an object—it turns into a personal form of expression.

A dialogue about process, intuition, and those invisible layers that give meaning to a piece of jewellery.

A thought, a sensation, an intuition taking form

Educated at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Viktor continuously explores the space between idea and matter. Guided by the energy of natural forms, he brings together traditional craftsmanship and an openness to digital technologies, without ever losing the immediacy of the hand.

His work moves beyond the conventional not through excess, but through a quiet emotional depth and a nearly meditative presence. Each piece emerges as a transformation—where a thought, a sensation, or an intuition finds its form, held in a careful balance between concept, material, and technique.

Antoaneta: Nature plays an essential role in your work. What draws you to organic forms, and how do you translate them into jewellery?

Viktor: I am drawn to their untamed naturalness. Organic forms are an endless source of inspiration—you just have to look more closely. In my jewellery, I try to preserve them as close as possible to their original form, so I can convey an idea or build a composition, almost like a musical arrangement.

Antoaneta: Turning an idea or an emotion into a tangible object seems central to your practice. How does this process unfold?

Viktor: It becomes interesting when I have to give form to a thought that appears spontaneously. I don’t follow a fixed path. Sometimes I begin with a drawing, other times I need a paper model or an alternative material, and in other cases I start directly in silver or in the final material.

Antoaneta: Your work brings together traditional craftsmanship and digital techniques. How do these two worlds meet in your creative process?

Viktor: There was a time when I was convinced this was the natural direction—the integration of digital technologies into established practices. My PhD is also focused on this topic. Lately, however, I find myself returning more and more to analog techniques and manual work.

Antoaneta: You often work with silver. What keeps bringing you back to this material?

Viktor: Silver is extremely versatile—malleable, easy to shape, suitable for casting, and rich in qualities. Its long history in jewellery, spanning thousands of years, has led to the development of remarkable techniques. All of this keeps bringing me back to it.

I create pieces that truly excite me

His minimalism is not about absence, but about clarity it creates space for meaning and interpretation. Viktor Pavlov’s jewellery functions as discreet yet expressive wearable sculptures, finding their full resonance in relation to the body and the individual who wears them.

Antoaneta: Your pieces are often perceived as wearable mini-sculptures. How do you see the relationship between jewellery and the body?

Viktor: For me, this relationship is essential. I want my pieces to be wearable, because only through contact with the body does jewellery reach its full potential.

Antoaneta: How do you see contemporary jewellery today, and how would you define it through your own practice?

Viktor: It’s a complex question I return to often. Rather than trying to define such a broad field, I prefer to create pieces that truly excite me.

Antoaneta: You aim to move beyond the conventional idea of jewellery. How does this intention take shape in your work?

Viktor: By exploring concepts that are less common in jewellery—unexpected forms, volumes, and compositions, or the use of patinas and pigments that create a surprising finish.

AUTOR 2026 -Focus Artist, an opportunity and a challenge

The artist will take part in AUTOR, the International Contemporary Jewellery Fair, taking place May 15–17 at the National History Museum of Romania. The collection he will present, Ocean, draws from the world of corals—the richness of their colors, forms, and living structures. Neither fully animal nor plant, they become, in Viktor’s view, the architects of a vibrant and deeply inspiring environment.

Antoaneta: What inspires you at the moment, and how do you see the relationship between the technical side and artistic expression?

Viktor: I am currently working on a new collection, Ocean, which I will present at Autor 2026. It is inspired by corals and the ecosystems they create. In applied arts, the technical and artistic sides are largely inseparable. It’s not about balance, but rather about a kind of symbiosis.

Antoaneta: What does AUTOR mean to you, and how do you see the contemporary jewellery scene in the region?

Viktor: AUTOR is both an important opportunity and a challenge—a context where I can present my work and connect directly with the audience, sharing the processes and ideas behind it. Meeting jewellers from all over the world is also very valuable. The fact that a festival of this level takes place in Southeast Europe contributes to the development of the local scene, and the proximity to Bulgaria helps strengthen this regional dialogue.
